The preserve's savanna, ravines and lakefront location allow visitors to observe one of North America’s busiest flyways for migratory birds, with at least 236 species of birds being seen here. Trails wind through the preserve to Lake Michigan, providing the first official public access to this section of shoreline since 1887. Known for its pristine natural areas, Fort Sheridan is home to several rare species not found elsewhere in the region. Rolling terrain, bluffs, ravines and mature trees make it a hiker's paradise. Trails connect visitors to self-guided educational exhibits along Fort Sheridan's historic parade ground and to other viewing stations. Visitors can enjoy hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, fishing, picnicking and birdwatching. Fort Sheridan is one of only a few places in Lake County that offers free public access to Lake Michigan and an awe-inspiring lake overlook perched on a 70-foot-high bluff. Street-side parking is available on the west side of the tracks along Western Avenue and Hyacinth Place south of West Old Elm Road, and on the east side of the tracks near both corners of West Old Elm and Sheridan roads.A scenic destination, Fort Sheridan Forest Preserve offers a variety of opportunities to recreate in nature. Parking at Fort Sheridan Station is maintained by the City of Highwood, and is available on both sides of the tracks. As of 2018, Fort Sheridan is the 156th busiest of Metra's 236 non-downtown stations, with an average of 259 weekday boardings.As of April 25, 2022, Fort Sheridan is served by 46 trains (23 in each direction) on weekdays, by 22 trains (11 in each direction) on Saturdays, and by 16 trains (eight in each direction) on Sundays and holidays.
